Candidate Forum a Success!
GLSSA Hosts SAFR Meeting
Banning Shooting Ranges through Zoning
GLSSA Chapter Meeting - Monroe
- October 26, 2004 - Candidate Forum a Success!
- On Tuesday October 26 there was a candidate′s forum at the
Jackson Outdoor Sportsmen′s Club. Candidates from the 7th
Congressional District plus the 65th House of Representative District
were invited.
- Congressional candidate Dr. Joe Swartz (Republican) said he is a
supporter of our second amendment rights and that he agrees now that the state
Concealed Pistol Licensing law seems to work. Senator Swartz did vote against
the CPL law in 2000. Dr, Swartz also said that he would vote in favor of
renewing the assault weapon ban. He many times referred to them as fully
automatic weapons despite repeated corrections from the knowledgeable assembly.
- Sharon Renier the Democratic candidate for congress said that she
supports the CPL law, and would not support renewing the assault weapon ban.
- Both of these candidates said they were NRA members.
- Sharon has a history of sport shooting and hunting, a claim that Dr. Swartz did not make.
- Also speaking was Leslie Mortimer, Republican candidate for the
65th House of Representative office. Leslie′s husband is
Representative Mickey Mortimer. Rep. Mickey Mortimer has been a great friend to
GLSSA and firearm owners over the past 6 years. Leslie Mortimer is very
knowledgeable about the issues concerning us and said she would work forward on
our legislative agenda.
- This will be a very close election. Please vote. Vote to protect
your firearm rights. Vote freedom first.

- Banning the Shooting Sports Through
Zoning
- "On Tuesday, August 17, 2004,
Great Lakes Shooting Sports Association attended a concerned citizens meeting in
Ionia, Mi. The Ionia County Commissioners passed a new Ionia County wide zoning
ordinance. One of the concerns of the
group, Concerned Citizens of Ionia County Against Zoning, is that under Chapter
18, "Land Use" severely limits shooting firearms and gun ranges. Some of the new
rules include: setting a minimum shooting range area to 40 acres, a minimum
"set-back" of 250 feet from all lot lines, require a minimum of 1/4 mile
distance from any church, school or residential structure and limiting the hours
of operation."
- To attend this Special Meeting to be held on Thursday, October 21st
at 7:00 PM at the Ionia V.F.W. Hall located one block North of M-21 on M-66 (
used to be the old MESC unemployment office). GLSSA President Rod Collins will
speak to us regarding this problem and what we can do to prevent this and any
other type of anti-gun activities. The meeting is open to everyone, not
just club members, as these issues concern all of us! Please come out and
hear what′s going on, offer your thoughts and
let us all work together for the best interest of any and all shooting sports
and clubs everywhere. Every sport shooter′s rights could suffer if this proposed
ordinance goes into effect.
